The Batman | Gotham Streets

Hi, I wanted to share some set design-illustration work I did for The Batman. These images of Gotham’s Streets were great fun to do, as it gave an opportunity to really drill down specific design and treatment ideas for the sets. Also, by virtue of being flat, side-view images, freed up a lot of mental space for ideas and level of finish, without worrying about perspective grids and foreshortening all the time etc…

Production Designer: James Chinlund
Art Director: James Lewis

Here is the street outside Selina Kyle’s apartment. We used a lot of 70’s era New York reference to push that great look of a decaying city, as such is Gotham. I took this one a little further with the addition of some lighting ideas.

This was a long, main section of the Gotham set, which was the entrance to Penguin’s nightclub, and Falcone’s bar. The task was to explore the treatment and weathering/aging of the set and how that might look. There was already a very clear vision of what it should feel like, so my job was to essentially combine all those ideas and get them down in some artwork.

This was the street that I believe was outside the Riddler’s apartment. I really wanted to push the texture of this area and make it feel run-down, even by Gotham’s standards. My personal favourite part is the ‘Starlight Bar’ sign the Set Dec graphics department created for this.

This was another of the two main stretches of set for Gotham. Most notably the restaurant/diner where we meet the Riddler who I thought was excellently cast with Paul Dano. My favourite design idea of this whole street is the Edward Hopper ‘Nighthawks’ inspiration for the diner by James Chinlund. And I really aimed to maintain that spirit in these images.

Thanks, hope you enjoyed. And Happy (Long) Halloween!
